Without any doubt, the change that must take place before we can seriously change our
negative impact on the planet will occur between our ears. Since early humans first
appeared, we have been hunter-gatherers. Virtually every moment of every day was spent in
nature. Most humans lived in harmony and with reverence to what was around them. With
the domestication of crops and animals came the dawn of civilization. We started to move
into villages and cities. Every step of progress moved us further and further from harmony
with the earth. We have come to the point when many people live their who lives and never
spend any real time in nature.
The result of that alienation is that most people think of the earth as nothing more than a
resource to be used, abused and discarded. Many of us have the attitude that people are
the only thing that is important and our job is to subdue the earth and use it in any way to
our advantage. That is the kind of thinking we must change. We must rethink our
relationship with nature and the earth to see it as our single, sole source of life to which we
are totally linked. Every bit of damage we do to it, we do to ourselves and to our children.
And every step we take to live in a more environmentally friendly manner will benefit us as
much as it will the earth. Our welfare, and the welfare of the planet cannot be separated.
Only when we see a global shift in thinking, will we see drastic improvement of how we treat
the earth. The very sad thing is, it will probably require a dramatic crisis to bring that
change of thinking.
These pages are our effort to be a small part of changing peoples thinking about the
environment.
