Hahaha cars back then were 'flexible flyers' with frames that twisted and flexed like nobody's business
Typically hot rod builds that aren't for concourse competition will discard them for a modern, custom built frame because those old frames were so flexy it was impossible to make them handle well (the real reason for the cushy rides)
several of those cars show marked suspension sag compared to stock ride height
Some of them re beefed, but not all

Saw this at a car show last weekend.  Car was a rust bucket but the camper was in good shape.  These were made (apparently) for a number of full sized cars by a few manufacturers.  This one was made by Leichner Manufacturing Co., Champaign, Illinois.  Current owner said it weighed ~300 lbs.
