Just a funny question. I have eight pairs. I use all of them. But in a van? Do I need all of them? How about you?

Only eight?

Seriouly, if you currently use all eight and your lifestyle and activities will remain nearly the same, you need all eight.
Me, three pairs.
One pair of heavy boots for motorcycling or hiking the countryside.
One pair of cushioned athletic shoes for regular walking (great for my plantar fasciitis that flares occasionally).
One pair of light slip-on slippers/loafers for around camp.
I have 4 pairs
Dedicated motorcycle boots. Icon field armor IIRC
Dedicated snowboard boots, bulky and get very little use
Modern Light Merrell "hiking boots" (might as well be tennis shoes)
Old Heavy steel shank Merrell hiking boots

I use to have a pair of shoes for use as "slippers" but have been transitioning to going barefoot.
I started with ten, now I'm down to four: 2 pairs of Keen Arroyo II's for everyday wear, some cheap-o Keen copies for muddy conditions, and my "dress" sneakers.
I'm not full time, but when i travel it's for a few weeks at a time. I usually have a pair of hiking boots for everyday where, a pair of Crocs for around camp and to step outside in the when nature calls - also work in the occasional public shower stall, and a pair of running or canyoneering shoes for hiking and climbing if I know I'm going to be walking in water. If I have my bike and plan to do anything but tooling around town I also take my motorcycle boots, and if I'm going to be meeting up with friends or family and plan to go out I may bring my cowboy boots.

That said, my last 3 week trip I forgot to throw any extra shoes in the trailer - had to do some service work on the truck first and just got to the point where I wanted to hit the road so I missed loading several things. I went the whole time with just my hiking boots that I wear everyday. So I guess the answer as to how many pairs do you "need" is 1. How many you want and will use is dictated by your lifestyle and available room to store them.
I have four: Two pairs of Vasque hiking shoes; one pair of sandals; one pair of crocs [Seahawks green].
Where can one even get Crocs these days? I went searching for them and all I found were some camo ones at Walmart.

Big 5 sporting goods.
I order my Crocs on line at a few different places depending on who has the cheapest price. Been wearing them everyday for the past 17 years and wouldn't wear anything else.
