The Trinity test site is only open to the public twice a year.  Will be open next on April 1st.

I had no idea this was private! A friend of mine who had worked at the lab site up in the side of the mountain took me through to show me way back in... um... before 1983? Awesome... and I hope you get to see it!
Just know there are no porta potties out there.
You can't remove anything.
I think the last couple of times you had to convoy to the site after meeting in town.
This is a weirdly attractive outing ...

If I want to see a crater, I'll go to Winslow, AZ and see a REAL crater. One that isn't radioactive....

This is the first I have heard of this ~~~  I remember my father telling me stories in the 60's about being an Officer observer and debriefer of air crews. during atomic testing.  He died of throat cancer in the early 80's, after spending almost a year in miitary hospitals, then being sent home to die with his tongue and throat removed.  His last 6 months he survived on a liquid diet. I have had spine problems since birth.

I wonder who to contact for answers?
This is one of the things that will fill the park I am taking over.
Hey Jim!  That park was the one I stayed at when I went to the Trinity Site and VLA.  That was my first experience with that park.

If anyone does go to the Trinity Site, do also go visit the Very Large Array or VLA which is about an hour west of Socorro.  They do tours and have a special day in conjunction with Trinity.

This is the place where they filmed the movie Contact, but it's not SETI.  It's a radio astronomy site.  Really awesome to see how they move those antennas around and how they make pictures from sound.

There are photos of Oppenheimer and the gang in normal attire with only dust boots over their shoes poking around the blast site where the tower stood.
Odd.
