Zeke has a battle going on with the local kangaroo rats and his dry food... it is a nightly battle to keep the rats out of his food... The simple solution is to get the dry foood off the ground, but why as it is good entertainment for him....

I had to put Lola's food in a rubbermaid bin. Those little devils even got into some of my food, so it all went into bins of various sizes.

LOL rats / mice etc, I watch those little bastards one night, A neighbor and I just got back to the house and I had left a bag of EXPENSIVE dog food on the porch, there they where looked like zillions of relatives going back and forth with my freshly purchased dog food stuffed in their faces! Till I let the Jack russells out! the fun was all over for them, the dogs had a blast, my life was never the same aftre that the dogs constantly rushed the porch door!

I managed to snag a few of those metal canisters that holiday popcorn comes in- about 3-4 gallon size...they work great for deterring the little rodents as well as making a fine extra seat.

That is what I use Karl...one at home in NM and one in the trailer in Durango...I buy the good lamb and rice dogfood without all the crap and chemicals in it from my local hardware store for Dina and it comes in 20# bags...so one bag fills up the container just right....
When I am one the road, I fill my plastic bin in the van with it from one of the tins....and just buy small bags on the road....to refill the bin. She doesn't eat a lot when we travel so it works good. I also buy the small packets of Pedigree wet food and mix a half bag with each meal....I feed her once a day so she eats it right up... The wet will keep without refrigeration for a day in the little packets once it is open...
I can tuck a bunch of them all over in the van...

Bri

I had a problem with them while at the last RTR, but found mouse traps worked well. I heard some where that putting steel wool where they get in to be an effective deterrent. Finding where they get in is another story as is how to protect wiring.

I use one of these to keep the food safe http://www.gamma2.net/vittles-vault-plus-15.htm. I break up what I feed my beagle each day so she's always hungry and always finishes her food. Granted she's a small dog so it's a half cup each time, but when I used to have and feed my Shepherd it was a cup each time. This is when I was homeless and tent camping out of a truck.

I've read a lot of horror stories about mice getting into RV's and what not. Most people who've beaten the problem claimed they did it with that spray-in expanding/hardening insulation stuff. I'm not sure and a bit reluctant to use it on my own rig yet. Has anyone tried this out yet?

Stuffed with steel wool first, then foamed in with Great Stuff insulation around it will keep out just about anything from rats to squirrels to coons as nearly as I've been able to conclude. Don't know whether it would do the same without the steel wool.

I'll give that a shot when the time comes. Thanks.
