California SSI/SSDI and EBT law change June 1st 2019 - Rajendora1 - 06-04-2019

Okay, CA just screwed us again.  We got a phone call from SocSec telling hubby who is on SSI that he is now elegible for EBT, the law passed so that people would have a little more to live on, right?  NOT.  We were told, go right away.  So we did.   I have EBT because my little business is iffy with the predictable income, and I have to care for him because he can't drive any more and we live in the truck.  So yeah, long story short, we went in to the TAD office (Aka good old welfare) and they said OH, he's on your account now and with his income, you get the shaft!  And if I had not gone in and said something, you can bet in November which is my re-file month, they would have said, oh, that was in June, you get the shaft AND a big bill for being over paid!  Have a nice day.

If you or a loved one (do we ever let hated ones know anything?) is on SSI, SSDI, in California and singular, then by all means, see if you can get some EBT under the unbundled law, which used to include some EBT in the SocSec payments.  If you are living with someone you "cook and eat with" (wtf, hubby's been there all along!) the other person will either loose a large chunk of their EBT or all of it.  And if a SSI/SSDI's family member should apply after June for EBT, they may get nothing at all!

We need to get the hell out of California. >.<;;

EBT = Electronic Benefit Transfer.

California's food stamp program.

It’s basically a debit card, onto which benefits are transferred each month.

No more tearing food stamps out of coupon books.  Blush

Yes, but it's also more.  A lot of people who see people using EBT cards to get cash in casinos or stuff like that do not realize that the government give you the option of having your Social Security put on the EBT card.  It makes a lot of people on Social Security who chose that rather than deal with a bank look like bums.  Which is wrong.  Not everyone with an EBT card is on "food stamps".  They are just spending their own money from when they were paying (by law) into the system.

Social Security never gave me that option. I guess you need to request it. not that I would want it.

people need to mind their own business. I never pay attention to what type of card someone is using.

Cash benefits/assistance also go on the EBT card.

I’ve never heard of SS going onto one, but that would be very handy for many people.

When Hubby got out of the hospital, they gave him the option here in CA to have his benefits on EBT card, so it might just be a CA thing.

We stuck with the bank we had.

Social Security has its own card they deposit to called Direct Express.

EBT is called that in a lot of states, at least every state I've gotten benefits in.

Something doesn't sound right about that. If there was ever an issue with one account they could deactivate the card shutting down the other.
