Please join me in Pahrump, NV for a Remote Area Medical (RAM) Clinic, Oct 4-6. It's an opportunity for you to get some services that you've been putting off due to cost, including dental (cleanings, fillings, extractions), vision (examination, eye glasses), and being seen by a medical doctor. After hearing about RAM here in the Forum, I went to their 2017 Reno Clinic because I needed a tooth extracted. Not only was the dental work high quality, but the volunteers were so caring and respectful. All services are free.

Since then, I've also become a RAM volunteer. I find this volunteer work very fulfilling even though the days are long. I'll be volunteering in Pahrump, starting with clinic set up on Oct. 3rd. Please join me if you can. Sign up at http://ramusa.org, click on "volunteer."

Here is a video that Bob and I did over a year ago about my first experiences with RAM ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q0TLbIuKHLQ&t=252s

If you need a pet sitter in October while you are getting RAM services or while you volunteer for RAM, we have HOWA volunteer Julie standing by to help with that. Please email [email protected] so we make sure we have enough availability for your pet.  See more information from Julie below.*

I will schedule a HOWA Caravan to be in Pahrump during this time even though the weather may still be quite warm.

Hope to see you there!

*Message from Pet-Sitter Volunteer Julie:

Heya nomads! By now you've likely seen Suanne's post about the RAM medical clinic.

Much needed medical, dental, and treatment will be available in Pahrump, NV in early October. It is a great blessing for those needing any kind of medical help ... but lacking insurance. I encourage you to take advantage of this free service if you need it.

However, it dawned on me that some folks (like me) would shy away because of the long day it involves, and the fear of leaving their beloved pets that long. Soooo ... if that is your situation, I'd like to help (also free of charge). Details are not set yet since we don't know if folks have any interest. But I'm willing to camp in a specific area near pet owners to provide individual care for up to 6 other nomads. I've worked and volunteered in shelters, doggie daycares, vet offices, groomers, and boarding kennels for over 15 years. I know dogs best, but can handle cats too (which usually means NOT handling them).

During your absence, I would feed, potty, and if needed, medicate your pets until you return. This would NOT be daycare or intermingling of pets. We don't have the facilities for that. It will simply be individual attention to keep your pets healthy and happy while you are taking care of yourself at the RAM clinic.

If you are interested, let the folks at HOWA know now, so we can begin planning specifics. We wouldn't want anyone to neglect their own care for fear of leaving their pets alone. There is help out there!

Great organization. They have many clinics around the country throughout the year.
https://www.ramusa.org/clinic-schedule/

I've volunteered with RAM three times and might be able to travel to Haiti with them next year.

Just checked the video. Nice. Thanks for the shout out!

What a generous offer, Suanne.

I have thought about volunteering for RAM, but it would have to be a petless experience.

And, well, I travel with a dog.

Spend less, do more.

Some but not all RAM events have Vets for pet care in addition to people care.

I've set up a Special Caravan for Pahrump during the RAM clinic for those who want to camp with others. https://www.meetup.com/Caravans/events/264793660/

I'm a little bit confused about the instructions. The event is scheduled for Oct. 4-6 (all day). However their instructions say,

Quote:Typically, Remote Area Medical opens the clinic parking lot no later than 12 a.m. midnight on the first night of the event. Ticket distribution usually begins at 3 a.m., and patients are then served in numerical order according to their ticket number when clinic doors open, which typically occurs at 6 a.m. This process will repeat throughout the clinic days.
(emphasis mine)

So, by "first night" do they mean the night following Oct 3 or the night following Oct 4? In other words, do we start getting in line in the evening of Oct 3 and then wait till 3:00 then 6:00 on the morning of the 4th? Then repeat that for up to two more times till we are able to be seen?

Love Care Think do
(Because the doing is never perfect.)

To receive services the first day of the Pahrump clinic, October 4th, you best get your number at midnight before the clinic opens at 6am for registration, triage, and more waiting in line. The same would be true for clinic services the morning of the 5th and 6th. It's first come, first served.

Almost always you can get at least one kind of service each day. Typically, you must choose between dental and vision for any given single day, but then can come back for the next clinic day to get what ever service you didn't get the day before, getting another number and waiting in line yet again. Medical is usually available every day of the clinic and can be received on the same day as patients get either dental or vision services.

The services are quality, the people are caring, the lines are long with patience required.
